The Apostles' Creed was put together so that Christians in the second century could summarize the teachings of the Apostles. Most people couldn't read to study Scripture for themselves and very few people owned copies of the Old Testament or the New Testament writings. This Creed helped unify the faith, and hold the line when false doctrines were creeping in.
